Week 2 at UCB!

So this is my second week here at Cal and I have to say I am loving it. I am taking some fun intro courses and my professors all seem pretty chill, except one (more on that later). The campus is celebrating the 150th anniversary of women being admitted to the school. I was on the phone with my mom and told her this and she just scoffed and said that women don’t belong in higher education. She has this prehistoric view that women belong at home to cook, clean, and take care of the children while their husband works and does nothing to help around the house. She keeps expecting me to find a husband, drop out of school, and start having babies. Little does she know I’m not even into men haha!

The Trump Impeachment trial started today and to be honest I am thrilled. It was the talking point of almost every conversation on campus today. I still remember the day he got elected, it was nothing but excitement and victory ringing from the town bells. I still can’t believe he has a following, he has done nothing good for this country. I wish my family never supported this prick, but there’s no getting through to them. They’re probably more racists, bigoted, and xenophobic than he is, which is saying a LOT. This trial has put my family on edge, but I am excited to see this guy go.

I have been hearing a lot about the graduate students not getting paid appropriately at different UC campuses. It’s so sad how the university is nothing but some bureaucratic scumbags just tried to get every single dime they can out of students. Tuition is already insanely high, the cost of living at most campuses is deadly, and then they have the gut to trim wages in every way they can? I will never wrap my head around how the chancellors are able to sleep at night, knowing the majority of their students are unable to afford food and housing. They won’t even let people sleep in their cars on campus. It honestly makes me ashamed of the UC system and takes away all prestige if they can’t even help students stay alive.

Anyways, that’s my rant on the current climate at the UC. I bet no one is reading this, but it felt good to get it out there. Thanks for reading (assuming you did)!

About Me!

My name is Sarah Thomas and I am a first year student at UC Berkeley majoring in Political Science! I was born and raised in Mesa, Arizona and decided to get out of the state for a while during college. My family are all devout Christians and extremely conservative, so I have practically been shunned for moving out here to pursue my education. While I don’t necessarily consider myself a liberal, according to my family I have some “radical ideology” that goes against the beliefs of the church. I started this blog to be able to talk about my experience at Cal and hopefully give some students the push to escape the toxicity of their own home towns. Aside from all that, I love the ocean, hiking, and all things outdoors. Growing up in Arizona, I was always outdoors and that has stuck with me into adulthood. I hope this gives you some insight into who I am, but you will definitely see more as I update this blog!
